New Advancement Officers
The goal of the new advancement professionals’ workshop is to provide an interactive and dynamic learning environment for our participants. The session was designed to allow for maximum communication and interaction between newcomers and veteran professionals. The hope is that each participant leaves the session with a basic understanding of the fundamentals of each of the advancement functional areas (Alumni Relations, Marketing, Communications, Advancement Services, Development) and with several new contacts he/she can call on in the future for assistance and resources.
The day will be split into functional and cross-functional aspects. As participants arrive, they will be divided into cross-functional table groups, with whom they will remain for most of the session. Each table group will choose a “table leader” who will serve the group by assisting with the continuation of the conversation. The plan is for each of our newcomers to meet other newcomers from varying disciplines and across the districts, and for them to have the opportunity to meet other more seasoned professionals as well.
Panelists and speakers include:
Robert Weiner, President, Robert L. Weiner Consulting (Advancement Services)
Rachel Beal, Director of Development, Cal State Fullerton
Anne-Marie Devine, Director of Media Relations, University of San Francisco

Emerging Leaders
The goal of the Emerging Leadership workshop is to provide an interactive and dynamic opportunity to explore leadership development with a top group of advancement professionals from across the country and from a variety of types of institutions. It will cover the fundamentals of what the primary qualities of good leadership skills are, what skills you can develop to enhance your own strengths and weaknesses and what obstacles you might encounter along the way. It will also assist participants in understanding what will be expected of them as they move higher in the leadership of their institutions. Topics will cover core leadership qualities; assessment of current leadership experience; personal skills cultivation; and current trends in the field. Included will be a frank discussion of the pros and cons of seeking leadership positions.
