We’ll cover lots of ground so that you’ll be energized and motivated to take those next steps along the path to career advancement.
Amy Phillips, Gift Registrar, Smithsonian Institution
With more than 20 years of work experience at various charitable organizations, Amy Phillips has acquired an understanding for many aspects of nonprofit management. Phillips’ prior experience in institutional advancement has included positions at academic institutions, museums and even a “think tank” in Washington, D.C., as well as various contractual/consulting opportunities. An active CASE member, Phillips has earned “faculty star” citations as a presenter at several conferences, including the annual Summer Institute in Advancement Services. She has also given presentations on software utilization tricks, best office practices and matching gift processes for the Millennium user community, as well as the Association for Advancement Services Professionals [AASP]. She is an active Founding Member of AASP, serving on the Board as membership chair and member of the Ethics Committee. Amy is currently consulting with organizations in the DC area as she pursues her next career challenge.
Communications - Media Training
Join television veteran Carol Ivy for a master class that focuses on best practices for working with print and broadcast media, including a segment of the session dedicated to on-camera media training. Attendees will learn interviewing techniques, message management and tips for communicating effectively with reporters as well as view examples of the good, the bad and the successful. Ivy will also lead small-group discussions and guide group-selected spokespeople through on-camera training with immediate playback and positive critique.

Ivy has more than 30 years' experience as a journalist. For most of those years, she was an on-air correspondent for ABC News and the ABC owned-and-operated station, KGO-TV, in San Francisco. She has been professionally recognized with the Radio and Television News Directors' Edward R. Murrow award, the George Foster Peabody award and the J.C. Penney Missouri award for team coverage of "The Quake of '89." She has served as media advisor to the National Center for State Courts and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, both in Washington, D.C., as well as the United States Department of Justice.
Ivy has taught Mass Communications at the University of San Francisco and has been a guest lecturer at the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Southern California. She holds a bachelor's degree from California State University, Long Beach and currently owns a media consulting business, "Up Your Image," in San Francisco.
